Home Decorating Habits to Avoid

We’re all guilty of having bad habits here and there – slouching, biting your nails, knuckle cracking etc. and although bad habits are annoying, they don’t have any major consequences. However, when it comes to home ownership – one bad habit can really set you back and could be enough to ruin your home’s whole ambiance.

Man Decorating Room Using Paint Roller On Wall

Decorating a home can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. On one hand you have empty rooms filled with potential and on the other hand you have a lot of decisions to make. But what’s important is that when making these decisions – not to let any bad habits creep in!

Some of you may not even be aware that you’re making these bad habits – so in order not to miss them, we’ve rounded up some of the worst (so that you’re not likely to make them):

Hanging Shelving or Artwork Inefficiently

It may sound little – but it’s something that can have such a big impact! Think about it – hanging either your favourite piece or your floating shelves too high, is enough to distort the height of a room. Measure beforehand, it doesn’t take long and will benefit you in the long run!

Not Knowing When to Quit

It’s great to get enthused about decorating your home – but don’t go overboard! Try stick with some sort of game plan and make sure that everything you buy has enough space; otherwise you’ll be overwhelmed with the amount of décor with nowhere to put it.

Don’t Copy

We all love browsing to get some new décor ideas – and whilst using magazines and Pinterest is great for inspiration – you don’t want to make too much of an exact copy to the pictures you see. Inspiration is good, but remember decorating is about letting your uniqueness shine.

Don’t Push All Furniture against the Wall

Many of us try pushing all our furniture against the wall will create more space.  Don’t do this – it doesn’t create any more space than you have and you’ll just end up making your living space look more like a doctor’s waiting room. Fair enough having bookcases up against the wall but try experiment with the rest of your furniture – it’s unnatural to have all furniture against a wall!

Too Formal

There’s nothing wrong with a formal approach to a room. These are normally the rooms decorated that we feel most proud of – however it’s a room that should still make people feel comfortable in. Be sure to give your space a function – your main focus might be too look good, but don’t forget to make it liveable and ensure its welcoming to guests.

Don’t go overboard with Matching

Your taste should reflect how you envision a beautiful room – filling it with matching sets will just look odd. It’s better to look from one wall to the other and see something different so make sure you have fun and try mixing things up!

STOP ignoring your feelings.

Last but by no means least – is one of the most important ones to think about. Do you occasionally find yourself cringing every time you come home? Then that’s a sign that you need to start listening to your feelings and do something about it! Wouldn’t you rather come home feeling like a king/queen? If you’re having similar thoughts then it’s time to do something about it – make your home a home you’re proud of!
