Lagom: The Swedish Lifestyle Trend

You’ve probably heard of the Danish concept ‘hygge’, which many were talking about 12 months or so ago, well since then another Scandinavian concept called ‘lagom’ has arrived and this time it’s from Sweden. Hygge roughly translated means ‘cosiness’, but essentially is the creation of a warm and comfortable atmosphere when meeting with family and friends. Lagom differs in that it’s more of an ongoing way of living, rather than a ‘moment in time’ concept and means ‘just the right amount’. Curious about this Swedish concept and how it applies to the way we live – both work and play – the team here at Shelfstore decided to find out more.

Make space

Lagom it seems is all about creating a simpler look and making more space to be able to enjoy those home accessories you really love the most. It’s all about moderation. What that may mean is clearing out and decluttering in order to make more space and achieve the right balance.

Neutral colours

The key is – keep things simple. So a colour scheme using a few key colours such as brown, grey and cream complemented by natural surfaces such as wood and stone work well together and essentially bring the outdoors indoors. Add some indoor greenery too and you have created a calm and inviting space.

Add light

Maintain a light and airy feeling all year round by ensuring you have ample lighting around your home. Use different styles of lighting – spotlights, pendant lights, table lights and candles – with LED energy efficient bulbs to save on money and reduce waste. Position them around your home at different levels – window sills, side tables, bookcases and shelves – to direct light and brighten darker areas.

Invest in your lifestyle

Choose your furniture and accessories carefully and buy smartly. You don’t have to spend a lot and buy high quality, but buying items made of durable natural materials and combining practicality with beauty will provide you with a home furnished well for the long-term.
