The Best Book Festivals Coming Up

If you’re a book lover like some of us here at Shelfstore, then you will certainly be inspired by this list of Book Festivals, which are coming up. From the iconic Hay Festival to the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, there is something of interest whatever your favourite genre.

Cambridge Literary Festival – 13th to 15th April

Set in the historic city of Cambridge, the Cambridge Literary Festival brings together novelists, poets, editors and critics, scientists, politicians, historians and entertainers to showcase the best in new and established writers. But the best thing is that it encourages the love of books – whatever age you are!

Cardiff Children’s Literature Festival – 21st to 29th April

With over 50 events to choose from, book lovers from toddlers to teens will be inspired by some of the best local and national contemporary authors and illustrators in both English and Welsh. Authors will be making their words and pictures come to life with tales of fantastical creatures, pooping dinosaurs, crime-solving detectives, wimpy kids and even some big pants. There are even events for adults too!

Barnes Children’s Literature Festival – 11th to 13th May

The Barnes Children’s Literature Festival hosts London’s largest celebration of children’s books. This year sessions will feature some of children’s literature’s best known names including Mick Inkpen, Ruby Redfort and Cressida Cowell, as well as Barnes’ very own national treasure, Judith Kerr, celebrating the 50th birthday of ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’.

Hay Festival – 24th May to 3rd June

The go-to festival for booklovers for 30 years, speakers now include writers, comedians, musicians and politicians alike. Added to that the location itself – the Brecon Beacons National Park – is a gem for anyone who loves the countryside. As always there is plenty scheduled to inspire and entertain as readers and writers come together to share stories and ideas.

Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival – 19th to 22nd July

Celebrating the very best in crime fiction, the festival is a must for any crime novel fans. This year special guests include John Grisham and Val McDermid, who are bound to have you sitting on the edge of your seats and if you choose you can enjoy a pint of Yorkshire’s finest ale at the same time.

Edinburgh International Book Festival – 11th to 27th August

This two week celebration of the written word is the largest of its kind in the world. Here visitors can soak up the atmosphere, browse the bookshops, enjoy refreshments from the cafe or bar and choose from a programme of over 800 events. Many events are free to attend, including daily readings, signings, workshops and children’s activities.

Bath Children’s Literature Festival – 28th September to 7th October

The Bath Children’s Literature Festival is the largest dedicated children’s literature festival in Europe and is a chance for children and young people to meet the creators of their literary heroes, see illustrations come to life and fuel their imaginations.

Cheltenham Literature Festival – 5th to 14th October

The Cheltenham Literature Festival is one of the oldest and best loved literature festivals in the world hosting lectures, poetry readings, children’s events, interviews, storytelling, book groups, writing workshops, education projects, live literature, all of which provide an inspiring mix of debate and discussion with the world’s greatest writers, poets, politicians, thinkers and stars.
